Concert Notes: Tinderbox Fest Sat.; Dave Matthews & HMag Festivals Rescheduled, & More

Holly Miranda and a host of established and up-and-coming female bands will play Saturday's Tinderbox Music Festival in Brooklyn.

This edition of Concert Notes is all about festivals, including a Brooklyn fest of female rockers and new dates for two events postponed by Hurricane Irene.

* the Tinderbox Music Festival takes place tomorrow, Sept. 10th, at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn. (I wrote about the inaugural Tinderbox fest last year.) The headliners on the main stage are Eternia and the Band (10 p.m.) and Holly Miranda (9 p.m.), but there are plenty of other musicians going all day long starting at 1 p.m., including XYLOS, Alyson Greenfield, Charlene Kaye and The Brilliant Eyes, The Debutante Hour, Still Saffire (representing Brooklyn's own Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls), EULA, and more. * the HMag Music Festival in Hoboken has been rescheduled for Oct. 16, at its original venue at Pier A Park in the Mile Square City. The headlining bands, The Walkmen and School of Seven Bells, are still on the schedule, along with Inner Party System, The Kickdrums, 7Mornings, Kangaroo Jones, Christina Alessi, Helloradio, and the Blaire Reinhard Band. The HMag Music Festival starts at 12 Noon and runs until 10 p.m.

* the Dave Matthews Band Caravan will now take place next weekend, Sept. 16th, 17th, and 18th, but will take place on Randall's Island instead of the original site of Governors Island. DMB will play a full set each night, and other musicians including Dispatch, Warren Haynes (solo), Brandi Carlile, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, and Josh Ritter and the Royal City Band.

* and finally, a note of very local interest: the 2011 Hoboken Italian Festival is underway, and besides the usual zeppole and cannoli there's old-time music. The festival runs from Sept. 8th to the 11th and, while you've already missed the NJ American Idol and the "Freestyle Friday" events, still to come is stage MC Johnny Maggio, music from Molfetta, Italy, opera singing, the Bronx Wanderers, and more. Concert Updates & Free Music Downloads for Hurricane Irene

Spend the hurricane weekend downloading free MP3 sampler albums, like this Kill Rock Stars 20th anniversary compilation.

I was set to write a post yesterday about free concerts coming up for this weekend... and then the news of Hurricane Irene broke. Needless to say, if the storm comes anywhere near shore, any outdoor concerts are going to be cancelled.

I wish that I had posted info about Thursday's free show featuring Wavves and Dee Dee from the Dum Dum Girls at the East River Amphitheater, since today's rain apparently held up and the concert indeed took place. (If anyone went to it, please post your reactions in the comments section below.)

This weekend's shows were to include the H-Mag Music Festival at Hoboken's Pier A park on Saturday, featuring The Walkmen and School of Seven Bells, among others. The good news is that the show will be taking place, and soon. A note on the H-Mag Music Festival website says, "The Music Fest WILL be rescheduled to an upcoming weekend in September with date TBA as soon as possible."

The Afro-Punk Festival in Commodore Barry Park in Brooklyn is still a go, it seems... for now. Santigold, Das Racist, Gym Class Heroes, and others are scheduled to play on Saturday, while Cee Lo Green, Toshi Reagan, Janelle Monae, and others are set to take the stage on Sunday.

An update on the Afro-Punk site reads, "The program of the Afro-Punk Festival hasn't changed until further notice, as this is a rain or shine event. We care about your safety and we'll make announcements if we have to modify the program." For the latest weather updates, check the Afro-Punk Twitter account.

(Brooklyn Vegan notes that a couple of artists have said that the Afro-Punk fest is cancelled. Let's hope the organizers issue an announcement soon to sort this all out.)

Regarding the big for-pay festival set to take place this weekend—the Dave Matthews Band Caravan on Governors Island—the show will take place as scheduled on Friday, but the Saturday and Sunday shows have been postponed.

If you're hanging out indoors this weekend and don't have to evacuate the premises, this will be the perfect chance to download some free music, and Amazon.com has a new batch of free samplers to choose from. Among them:

Summer Concerts On Sale: Dave Matthews Band, Death from Above 1979, Governor's Ball, TV on the Radio, More

Tickets for the Aug. 22 show by Deerhunter (shown at River Rocks last summer) go on sale May 20 at 12 Noon.

It's still only May, but some of the summer concerts continue to be announced, and tickets are going on sale in the next day or two for some of the in-demand shows. This includes the Dave Matthews Band "Caravan" festival, the Foo Fighters two area appearances, and a show by the Canadian band Death from Above 1979. Here's a look at some of them, with other assorted summer concert information. (I'll have details on more free summer concerts in upcoming posts.)

Bonnaroo 2010 Lineup Announced: Dave Matthews, Weezer, Jay-Z, Jimmy Cliff, and Much More

The folks at Bonnaroo announced their 2010 schedule today, and as usual it's a great lineup. Among the most well-known names are the Dave Matthews Band, Jay-Z, Stevie Wonder, Jeff Beck, Weezer, John Fogerty, OK Go, Norah Jones, Phoenix, and The Flaming Lips (performing Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon").

This year's Bonnaroo Festival will be held June 10th to 13th, and as always will take place in Manchester, Tennessee. You can get your Bonnaroo 2010 tickets here.
