Great FREE NYC Concerts This Week (including B.B. King & DJ Kool Herc Tonight)

This is a big week for great free shows in New York (and you may, in fact, have to make some tough choices when shows conflict). Tonight is such an occasion, when the legendary B.B. King plays the first night of the Lowdown Hudson Blues Festival at Brookfield Place Waterfront Plaza (formerly the plaza at the World Financial Center). The show starts at 6 p.m. with the James Hunter Six.

B.B. King plays free in Lower Manhattan tonight; see other free shows below.

But B.B. King isn't the only legend playing a free show tonight: DJ Kool Herc, considered the "founder of hip-hop culture," is playing a SummerStage concert in Crotona Park in Queens, also at 6 p.m. And there are three great free gigs to choose from Thursday night.

Now Streaming: New CDs from Metric, The Hives, Alejandro Escovedo, & More

Some great albums are up for online streaming this week, including new releases from some of my favorites: Metric, Alejandro Escovedo, The Hives, Shawn Colvin, and Rhett Miller. And that's just for starters; you'll also be able to listen to the new albums by Pujol, The Temper Trap, The Tallest Man on Earth, The Melvins, Langhorne Slim, and soul legend Bobby Womack.

Above: One of the "Reflections" videos Metric produced for its new album, "Synthetica."

Speaking of legends, Womack isn't the only veteran artists with a new album on preview. This week you'll find the first new album by The Beach Boys in what seems like forever (see a New York Times review), a new release by Joe Walsh, and a special box set (and other commemorative editions) marking the the 25th anniversary Paul Simon's "Graceland."

I've been a fan of Shawn Colvin since I first saw her play with a rock band she had back in the early 1980s, so I'm definitely looking forward to hearing "All Fall Down," her first studio album in almost six years. It comes out tomorrow, the same day that Colvin's autobiography, "Diamond in the Rough," is released. (Colvin will do an appearance and book signing in New York Tuesday, June 6th at 6 p.m. at the Barnes & Noble in Tribeca.)

There's a second chance to listen to the new album from The Walkmen, Crocodiles, and Jherek Bischoff. And for all the fans of '80s rock and big hair, AOL Music is streaming the soundtrack of the "Rock of Ages" movie this week.

Alejandro Escovedo & Jesse Malin Rock Maxwell's

Alejandro Escovedo playing at Maxwell's Friday night.
For a great rock show with veteran musicians playing in a small venue, you couldn't do much better than Friday night's show at Maxwell's in Hoboken. On the bill were Jesse Malin and the St. Marks Social and Alejandro Escovedo and the Sensitive Boys, two bands led by men who have gone from punk rock to singer-songwriters with an edge. Both are artists who I've seen at Maxwell's before.

Malin, who was in the punk band D Generation in the 1990s, has been headlining shows for some time, and his new band St. Marks Social sounds great. To see them as the opener for a talent like Escovedo is a real treat. Escovedo's punk pedigree goes back to the 1970s in San Francisco with bands like the Nuns and Rank and File; he began his solo career (which now includes 10 albums) in 1992.

David Pulkingham and Alejandro Escovedo.
Even before he began his solo work Escovedo has blended styles including punk, folk, and country, and he continues to mix things up — perhaps not surprising, since he grew up in a musical family and has lived in places ranging from Texas and California to New York and back to Texas. I last saw Alejandro Escovedo several years ago when his album 2006 "The Boxing Mirror" came out, which featured a string section.

His current band includes drummer Hector Munez (who has been with him 28 years, Escovedo said) and guitarist David Pulkingham, both of whom play on his latest album, "Street Songs of Love."

Escovedo and the Sensitive Boys played songs from throughout his career, including "Castanets," "Down in the Bowery," "Five Hearts Breaking," "Always a Friend," and "Pissed Off 2 a.m."

Jesse Malin and Alejandro Escovedo sharing vocals during an encore.
After Escovedo's set Jesse Malin and his band returned to the stage and the two bands performed a short encore set of covers, including Whiskeytown's "Excuse Me While I Break My Own Heart Tonight," Johnny Thunders' "You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory," and the Rolling Stones' "Miss You."

This was a great chance to see two great artists on one bill, and Maxwell's has some more well-regarded acts playing in its intimate confines: NRBQ on June 10th, James McMurtry on June 17th, The Feelies on July 1st and 2nd, and Fountains of Wayne on July 21st and 22nd. See the Maxwell's website for links to tickets.
